Lee Asher: Live In Malaysia – The Experience

“Heck yea! Its going to be awesome!” – Vogue

Above was the conversation that started it all. It all began with some casual chat but somehow we were both just really interested to see Lee Asher Live! Bogged down by many issues (e.g. RDM Logo, Contacting Magicians, Generating Posts for RDM, RDM RDM RDM!), both of us left things till the eleventh hour before confirming our trip to Malaysia, KL.

We booked out transport to KL on the day before the lecture! The bus ride from Singapore to KL took 7 HOURS! It didn’t really daunt us though. We were really excited to see Lee Asher Live and this was most probably the only feasible chance in a long time. When we reached, we haven’t even gotten our tickets yet. However, we told Magic Garage that we were coming down and the ever so nice Caleb (MagicGarage Team) saved 2 tickets for Vogue and I!

You have got to love the Magic Garage team comprising of namely Issac, Caleb and Yukiko and gang! They were all really friendly and helped us feel at home in a foreign place!

Squeezing our way through the crowd, we were one of the first few to enter the club/pub. There he was, Lee Asher! He was right at the front greeting every single one of the people entering! A friendly handshake, a wide smile, and a pat on the back was what made me feel that Lee was an old friend mine. I have to say that Lee seemed to put on some weight compared with past pictures on his site! Hehe.

The mood was really upbeat and lively, Lee is a real talented speaker, spicing up his lecture with well timed and relevant jokes that never failed to get the crowds roaring. He spoke with much enthusiasm even though both Vogue and I knew that this was probably his hundredth time giving similar lectures throughout the world.

Soon, he starting enthralling us with the history of magic, the real origins of the double lift, the ambitious card plot, the pop up move and brought us back into the past and left us in awe at the genius or rather the ingenuity of magicians from the past!

“It is very important for us to know our history, cause if we don’t know we are going to repeat our history and if we don’t credit them, who will credit us?” – A line that I think sums up what magic is all about and defines how magic evolves as an art!

He also shared with us his personal experience on magic, tips and tricks on how to improve your magic, and encouraged us to like think instead of blindly doing tricks with a common patter. He murdered all our doubts by giving clear and practical solutions to all the questions we posed him. He made magic so simple, so pure, and so fun.

The real deal came after the lecture, he was swamped by all the magicians. It was like a fireflies to a light source. Lee was busy signing autographs, giving away his jerry nugget cards with his signature on it to those who came, taking photos with everyone. With the lecture ended at 830pm and our bus ride home was at 1000pm, it was a frantic rush! We must thank all the magicians who allowed us to steal Lee for 20-odd minutes or so.
