Illusions of the Mind – The Review
JC Sum and ‘Magic Babe’ Ning recently presented sneak previews of their “Illusions of the Mind” show at the Peranakan Museum. This series of performances served as one of the highlights of the Explore Singapore! 2010 campaign. Response was overwhelming and all 3 shows were completely booked up way before the shows even started. Fortunately I managed to get a seat! =D.

Ning in deep concentration
JC and Ning kicked off with a unique “hand exercise” that sparked off much laughter and really warmed up the audiences. Their opening piece was a remote viewing demonstration by Ning as she accurately identifies the jumbo sized cards chosen by the audiences while blind folded. The finale to this demonstration was a classic effect which lacked an element of closure. It left the audiences in discussions about the identity of the card that Ning pulled out.

Magic Game Show! Colours and Smiles on Stage
They also featured a magic game show, which settled well with the audiences because of the duo’s refreshing approach of presenting a prediction effect. Loads of audience interaction and laughter ensued with JC being able to predict the result of this game show. Ning also demonstrated her ability to detect liars so watch out guys!
Wrapping things up was the prediction of a random 4 digit number generated by two separate audiences. Almost like a mini version of their 4-D prediction which took place in January this year, it was a appropriate piece for closing the show.
I’m normally struggling to stay awake during a mentalism show but in retrospect, I was actually engaged throughout the course of this 30 min “Illusions of the Mind” performance. It didn’t have the atmosphere of a mentalism show nor did it feel like a magic show.
Finally, I believe the audiences for the 10pm show probably had the last laugh as we were told at 9pm that the 8pm show was a “full dress rehearsal”. Wonder if that happened at the 10 o’clock show as well? ;D

Hi guys,
Thanks for the review! I especially like ” It didn’t have the atmosphere of a mentalism show nor did it feel like a magic show.” – that is exactly the intention.
The show is still partially “work in progress” as it officially launches next year but the sneka previews gave us great reactional feedback from live audiences!
